There’s no need to spend gobs of money to get the smell out of your dishwasher. Build-up from water can lead to a stale smell and stinky dishes. There’s two handy kitchen ingredients that will have your dishwasher stench-free quickly and it won’t break the bank!

Chances are, you might already have these two ingredients in your cupboard already! Baking soda and vinegar. The perfect combination for many cleaning projects. The chemical reaction has incredible cleaning power and is a perfect remedy for stuck-on mineral deposits from hard water.

All you have to do is pour about a cup of vinegar into your dishwasher, run a cycle with no soap, and there you go! If you still notice a bad smell, pour some baking soda in the dishwasher, let it sit overnight and then run another cycle with no soap. Baking soda is an incredible deodorizer and should clear the smell right up.

You can also buy special capsules that are made specially for cleaning the inside of your dishwasher. You can find them at most home improvement stores. Simply swap your usual dish detergent for these tablets and mineral deposits will be washed away. You might even notice your dishes coming out cleaner dishes after!

If you’ve performed one or both of these tactics, it might be time to call a plumber. Sometimes food can become lodged within the drain at the bottom of your dishwasher. You can take this apart yourself, but the pieces are delicate. If you’re not 100% confident in your dishwasher assembly skills, it might be best to have the job performed by a professional.
